What is NACS?

The North American Charging Standard (NACS) is an electric vehicle (EV) charging connector standard originally developed by Tesla Inc. In 2012, Tesla introduced its proprietary charging connector, referred to at the time as the "Tesla charging connector," for use with its own vehicles. Meanwhile, other automakers primarily adopted the Combined Charging System (CCS), specifically CCS1 in North America and CCS2 in Europe for DC fast charging.

On November 11, 2022, Tesla publicly released the design specifications for its charging connector and renamed it the North American Charging Standard (NACS). The move aimed to promote NACS as a new charging standard in North America, aligning with DIN 70121 and ISO 15118 protocols. Following this, several major automakers announced plans to incorporate NACS-compatible charging ports into future EV models.

In April 2023, SAE International issued a Technical Information Report (TIR) under the SAE J3400 standard, addressing a coupling system aligned with NACS for most EVs currently on North American roads. NACS, CCS, and CHAdeMO: How the Standards Compare

Three key fast-charging standards currently coexist in the U.S.: NACS, CCS1, and CHAdeMO. However, Tesla's NACS stands out for its smaller, combined plug design that supports both AC and DC charging, unlike CCS which requires separate plugs. The streamlined design makes NACS a cost-effective, lower-maintenance option while maintaining the same level of compatibility and reliability.

What is CCS?

CCS was developed as a collaborative effort by automakers and charging infrastructure providers to establish a widely accepted fast-charging standard. It includes two versions: CCS1 for North America and CCS2 for Europe. Unlike NACS, CCS has a dual-connector design with separate AC and DC pins, making the connectors bulkier but highly compatible with different EV models.

What is CHAdeMO?

CHAdeMO was initially developed in Japan by the CHAdeMO Association, consisting of major players like TEPCO and Nissan. It was one of the earliest DC fast-charging standards and remains popular in Japan and some parts of Asia. The CHAdeMO connector is larger and typically requires a separate AC J1772 connector for AC charging, making it less compact than NACS.
